PrideChess Variant

Non-Binary Chess variant badge

Non-Binary Chess

“No beginning. No end. No binary.”

The variant

What changes

Non-Binary Chess replaces the traditional royal pairing with two Ardhanarishvara pieces.

In PrideChess, Ardhanarishvara moves one square in any direction and also has a special leap. That combination creates a royal that can look contained one moment and find an unexpected escape the next.

The rules

Four things to know

  1. Two Ardhanarishvaras

Each side begins with two royal Ardhanarishvara pieces.

  2. One square

Ardhanarishvara may move one square in any direction.

  3. Special leap

It also has a conditional leap that changes how containment works.

  4. Both are royal

Both pieces must be protected throughout the game.

Strategy

What changes strategically.

Non-Binary Chess changes how you think about containment. In Classic, controlling nearby squares is often enough to box a king in. Ardhanarishvara complicates that assumption.

The leap means a position that looks closed may not actually be closed. Attacks must account for local movement and sudden displacement at the same time.

Why this variant

Why PrideChess plays it this way.

Non-Binary Chess needed a royal that was not simply a midpoint between existing pieces.

Ardhanarishvara is a sacred figure within living Hindu traditions, commonly understood as a composite form of Shiva and Parvati. That symbolism is the cultural reference behind PrideChess’s use of the name for the Non-Binary royal.

PrideChess treats Ardhanarishvara as a living sacred reference. The chess piece is a PrideChess gameplay implementation, not a claim to redefine the religious figure.
